Fine Dining

Barcelona does a special occasion as well as any city in Europe, and a few of these rooms are genuinely world class. These are the splurges I think earn it: the date night spots, the trendy tasting menus everyone is trying to get into, and the seafood and rice houses that have been doing it right for decades. Most take reservations well in advance, so book ahead.

Koy Shunka
Gothic QuarterJapanese / Omakase€145–€220 ($168–$255 per person)

My take: I walked past this place twice. The door is unmarked and you have to knock to get in, which makes the place feel like a secret even though it's been one of the best Japanese restaurants in Spain for over a decade. They do a Japanese technique through Mediterranean ingredients, and the tuna was a standout for me. Book the counter so you can watch the open kitchen, and reserve well ahead since seats open about two months out and go fast. It's tucked in the Gothic Quarter, so you're a short walk from the Cathedral for a wander after.

Imprevisto Restaurant
Dreta de l'EixampleMediterranean tasting menu€72–€140 ($84–$162 per person)

My take: This one is a surprise from the first course to the last, you don't pick anything, you just let the kitchen take you through seven or ten courses. The room is small and low-key, and the staff was top tier. The beef tartare, the cabbage with grapefruit and kaffir lime were our favorites if I had to pick, but everything was so good. Plus a couple glasses of wine the sommelier recommended. It's in the Eixample right by Casa Batlló, so do the Gaudí walk down Passeig de Gràcia before or after and you've got the whole evening sorted.

Passeig de GràciaCatalan fine dining€190–€270 ($220–$313 per person)

My take: This is the dress-up dinner of the trip. It's inside the Mandarin Oriental on Passeig de Gràcia, a warm gold room with a window into the kitchen so you can watch the whole thing run. The cooking is Catalan but pushed somewhere more refined, and the chef came out to say hello to every table the night we went. We did the tasting menu, and the El Maresme prawns and the cod. It's right next to Casa Batlló, so it's an easy one to pair with a Gaudí walk on the same block before dinner.

Trendy Vibes

Compartir Barcelona
EixampleModern sharing plates€60–€100 ($70–$116 per person)

My take: Compartir was one of the easier nice dinners to recommend because it still felt fun. I liked that we could order a bunch of plates for the table instead of committing to a long tasting menu. The room feels elevated but relaxed, and the food has that creative Barcelona energy without making the night feel too serious. I’d book it when you want something nicer than tapas, but still want to share, try a lot, and keep the night moving.

Trendy Vibes
Slow&Low
Sant AntoniCreative tasting menu€150–€180 ($174–$209 per person)

My take: The most unique restaurant I ate at in Barcelona. One plate leans Mexican, the next Thai, the next something Argentinian, all built on Spanish seafood and tied together better than that mix sounds. Book one of the six counter stools so you're right across from the chefs, who walk you through every dish themselves. The menu comes in a few lengths depending on how long you want to be there. It's in Sant Antoni by the market, a neighborhood worth showing up early for, so grab a vermouth at one of the bars around the Mercat de Sant Antoni before your seating.

Trendy Vibes
Antigua
Sant Gervasi-GalvanyMediterranean€30–€50 ($35–$58 per person)

My take: The room up in Sant Gervasi is small and dim, exposed brick, bookshelves, wooden sculptures, and warm light. The cooking is Mediterranean with a few creative turns. We liked the beet soup with Idiazábal gelato and the tuna tartare to start, then let the market dishes carry the rest. It's above the tourist center in a quiet residential stretch, so plan to linger over a last glass of wine rather than rushing off anywhere.

Seafood, Rice & Catalan Classics

Seafood, Rice & Catalan Classics
Fishology Restaurant
EixampleSeafood tasting menu€95–€140 ($110–$162 per person)

My take: A whole menu built around fish and almost nothing else, but not the way you'd expect. The kitchen leans on old preserving methods, curing, smoking, aging, and uses every part of the fish, so you end up eating cuts and preparations you've probably never seen. Start with the cured fish board, it's the clearest look at what they do, and the aged tuna tartare were our favorites. They pour vermouth as an alternative to the wine pairing, which felt right for Barcelona. It's an open-kitchen room in the Eixample, low-key enough that you can settle in for the long tasting without it feeling stuffy.

Seafood, Rice & Catalan Classics
Botafumeiro
GràciaSeafood / Spanish classics€50–€120 ($58–$139 per person)

My take: We ordered the big seafood platter to start, then moved into a whole grilled fish and the seafood paella. Everything comes up from Galicia daily and it was some of the freshest seafood I have ever had. The room is formal, white tablecloths and jacketed waiters. It's on Gran de Gràcia, so head up into the Gràcia plazas afterward for a drink and a slower end to the night.

Seafood, Rice & Catalan Classics
Estimar
El BornSeafood / Mediterranean€90–€120 ($104–$139 per person)

My take: The room is small and contemporary with an open kitchen, and the day's catch is laid out on ice right as you walk in. We started with oysters and the langoustine carpaccio, then the red shrimp and a whole grilled fish off the ice at the counter. The seafood is about as pristine as it gets, cooked simply. It's tucked down a narrow lane in El Born behind Santa Maria del Mar, so wander the side streets for a wine bar after, the neighborhood is full of them.
